YUYUN: JOURNEY TO RECOVERY AND A NEW HOME ON THE ISLAND

Mar 27, 2025

Yuyun is an orangutan who has lived on Island #0 at Samboja Lestari for a long time, sharing her space with her fellow orangutan, Jeffrey. Previously, Yuyun had faced numerous health challenges, including suffering from Orangutan Respiratory Disease Syndrome (ORDS) and exhibiting abnormal behaviour, such as frequently regurgitating her food. Despite her challenging health history, Yuyun managed to adapt well to life on the island, leading a peaceful existence alongside Jeffrey. Although they were rarely seen together, both orangutans coexisted harmoniously without any issues.

Unfortunately, on late 2024, Yuyun’s health took a drastic turn for the worse. On the island, she appeared weak and lost her appetite, which was very unusual as Yuyun was typically a voracious eater who finished all the food given by the technicians. Observing this change, the medical team at Samboja Lestari immediately conducted a thorough examination to determine the cause of Yuyun’s declining condition.

The examination revealed that Yuyun had tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia, a bacteria that can cause serious infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. Additionally, Yuyun was diagnosed with anemia. The medical team promptly responded by administering intensive treatment, including multivitamins, digestive health supplements, and Sangobion as an iron supplement. Considering Yuyun’s abnormal behaviour of frequently regurgitating food, the technicians also adjusted her diet by avoiding soft-textured foods to prevent her from vomiting.

After undergoing intensive treatment for approximately two months, Yuyun was declared free from infection. With her health now stable, Yuyun was finally ready to return to the sanctuary island. However, this time, she was not placed on Island #0 as before. Due to ongoing construction on Island #0, Yuyun was relocated to Island #12A – one of the sanctuary islands designated for orangutans that cannot be released back into the wild. This island covers an area of about 0.6 hectares, providing a suitable habitat for Yuyun to live freely under supervision.

Upon arriving at Island #12A, Yuyun was welcomed by Jeffrey, who had been moved there earlier. Despite being in a new environment, Yuyun appeared happy and began to adjust to her new island. Jeffrey’s presence also aided Yuyun in the adaptation process, providing a familiar face amidst the changes she was experiencing. Yuyun has resumed her daily activities on the island, now with a renewed spirit and a more supportive environment for her health.

Yuyun’s journey highlights the importance of meticulous medical attention and the support of the animal welfare team. From the treatment phase to her return to the island, Yuyun has faced many challenges, but now she can once again enjoy her life in the open, symbolizing strength and resilience despite all limitations.
