Why This Matters
Sebangau is one of the largest remaining strongholds for wild orangutans, with nearly 8,000 individuals living across this landscape. Around 3,500 are within the area we currently manage.
The Challenge
Much of this peatland forest was damaged by logging canals, which drained the land and left it vulnerable to fires and long-term degradation.
And, as they cover only about 3% of the earth’s surface, it is even more incredible that they’re such super-storers. If we lose them, it really is detrimental for the world, with far-reaching effects on climate change.
Not only is this environment at risk due to forest fires, but it is also highly susceptible to the super El Niño predicted this year to be the strongest on record.
Without restoration and protection, this habitat, and the orangutans within it, remain at risk.
What We’re Doing

Replanting forests with native species
Monitoring wild orangutan populations
Working with local communities to prevent fires
