A New Era of Healing
At Nyaru Menteng II (NM2), the road from rescue to release runs straight through our hospitals and clinics.

Every orangutan needs access to medical care, sometimes for weeks, sometimes for years. From treating broken bones and respiratory infections to managing chronic illnesses like malaria, our veterinary teams work every single day to keep our patients healthy.
This is care that never stops. And it’s only possible because people like you make it happen.

Medical care for orangutans
Each patient arrives with their own story of survival.

Alejandra
When Alejandra was just six months old, she fell from a tree, badly injuring her right eye. Delicate surgery saved her life, but it was the careful daily wound care and monitoring afterward that kept her recovery on track.
Beni
When young Beni broke his leg during play, setting the bone was just the start: months of rehabilitation, gentle exercise, and regular check-ups were what made him strong again.

Your support funds this constant, hands-on care: the follow-up treatments, therapies, and monitoring that give every orangutan the best chance at a full recovery.
The Nyaru Menteng Rehabilitation Center is home to:
plus, orangutan in total
orangutans currently in nursery and forest school
orangutans on pre-release islands
Healing Is the First Step Home
Release into the wild doesn’t happen without hospital and clinic visits, often many of them. Here, bones mend, infections clear, breathing strengthens, and energy returns. Only then can an orangutan begin the final stages of rehabilitation.
When you give to support ongoing care, you are funding the very first step in every release story.
Care That Never Stops
For many orangutans, the clinic isn’t a one-time stop; it’s a regular part of life during rehabilitation. They come back for vaccinations, parasite treatments, wound care, and ongoing therapy. Others need long-term management for chronic health conditions.
This continuous care is what keeps them healthy enough to progress through forest school and, one day, into the wild. Your donations keep our hospitals and clinics running, day after day, patient after patient.
Medical care for orangutans
BOS Foundation’s hospitals and clinics are where emergencies become recovery stories. A frightened arrival with labored breathing may spend days on a nebulizer. A young orangutan with a painful abscess might need repeated dental work. Malaria patients require weeks of medication and monitoring.
These facilities are always ready, stocked with medicines, staffed with skilled vets, and equipped for both urgent procedures and routine check-ups.
But they only stay that way with your help.
You Can Be Part of Their Recovery Story
The wild is waiting, but they can’t get there without daily medical care. From emergency surgery to the hundredth check-up, your gift makes every treatment possible.
What we’re building… next
Enhanced Medical Care
Construction of key medical facilities, including the clinic, isolation building and microbiology lab, are ongoing. These facilities will ensure we provide the highest level of veterinary care. Orangutans suffer illnesses and injuries like humans, and their welfare is a top concern.
Expanded Sanctuary Islands
Two of the seven islands have been completed and the remaining islands are still in progress. More islands will follow once these are built so that every unreleasable orangutans can still have a high quality of life, free from an enclosure, in a forested environment as close to a natural existence as possible.
Solar-Powered Sustainability
The site is so remote that there is limited power from the grid, so clean solar energy is the best way to give us the power we need to operate. This also aligns with our commitment to sustainability. by powering the center with clean energy for years to come as well as contributing to the global shift towards renewable resources.
Education Through Hospitality
We’re building a place to welcome professional partners, special visitors, and volunteers assisting and supporting the cause. With proper shelter and facilities, our conservation guests can maximize their time at Nyaru Menteng II.
Your donation impact so far
BOS has made significant progress already on the relocation and construction of the Nyaru Menteng II Rehabilitation Center. We are excited to share this progress with you.
A big move for Forest School
On 26th February, Forest School Group 4 was successfully transferred first, followed by Group 5. The young orangutans all travelled safely in transport cages without sedation. On arrival, they settled into their new night enclosures then began exploring their new Forest School the next day.

All aboard the Forest School bus
The younger orangutans in Group 2 made their journey by bus, enjoying a safe and smooth trip with their Surrogate Mothers.

Completed construction at Nyaru Menteng II includes:
All Forest School areas, where orphaned orangutans spend most of their time, learning to live as wild orangutans. The upgraded Forest School at NM II benefits from years of experience, with every detail designed to enhance safety, care, and to reinforce their arboreal (living in the trees) lifestyle.
Sturdy boardwalks built from long-lasting concrete and inspired by traditional Dayak design, allowing safe passage through challenging peat forest terrain.
Night enclosures where orangutans can rest securely.
Surrogate mother dormitory to support constant care.
New arboreal playgrounds and feeding platforms.
Enjoying their new feeding platform
New feeding platforms that encourage a more arboreal experience

These milestones are a pivotal step in our mission to create a center of excellence which prepares young orangutans to thrive in the wild. Every beam, boardwalk, and enclosure is a testament to your support, and every young orangutan here is one step closer to returning to the wild because of you.
Your support funds this constant, hands-on care: the follow-up treatments, therapies, and monitoring that give every orangutan the best chance at a full recovery.
