ANOTHER BABY SUN BEAR ARRIVES AT SAMBOJA LESTARI

Jun 26, 2025

Recently, the Samboja Lestari Rehabilitation Center received a female baby sun bear from BKSDA SKW II Tenggarong. Our team, consisting of a veterinarian, the animal welfare team, and the communications team, traveled to the BKSDA office to pick up the young bear. She was found in the Busang District, East Kutai, covered in mud.

According to BKSDA, the baby bear was first discovered by a local resident on a palm oil plantation road. Understanding the importance of wildlife protection, the resident contacted BKSDA East Kalimantan to hand her over. The bear was estimated to be less than a month old, weighing only 135 grams. After being rescued, she received temporary care at the Busang Police Subsector before being officially handed over to the BKSDA team.

Upon arrival at Samboja Lestari, the baby sun bear underwent an initial health examination. Overall, she was in good condition, although there were some red rashes on her paw pads. Due to her very young age, she requires intensive care to ensure her growth and health. She was then given the name Mia and placed in a special baby bear area, away from the activities of technicians and adult sun bears.

Mia is now receiving intensive care from our veterinary team. She is closely monitored to ensure her health remains stable. Additionally, Mia is being fed milk as her primary nutrition and is gradually being introduced to other foods. Once this quarantine period is over, she will begin her rehabilitation process to prepare for a return to the wild.

Our team is committed to providing the best possible care for Mia so that she can grow up healthy and strong. We hope she will progress well through rehabilitation and one day have the opportunity to return to her natural habitat.
